Athletes are heroes when they face their opposing teams on the fields. They bring thousands of fans together to watch them on Sunday nights. Fans feel proud to associate themselves with great players. Likewise, they are real-life heroes too. These busy athletes make their fans’ wishes come true. This story is about Josiah Desper, an eleven-year-old blood cancer survivor who was honored by his idols, the Washington Commanders, during a training camp session.

Chase Young, who is the defensive end of the team, has not been back to the camps to practice. However, it seems like the team has found his replacement already! The little guy brought the toughness and courage which is so needed on the field. Josiah Desper aspires to become a defensive lineman.

Washington Commanders had fans happy!

Ron Rivera, the head coach of the Washington Commanders, pleaded with the teammates to make Desper feel like a part of the team. The eleven-year-old is a native of Maryland and is a huge fan of the Commanders. Rivera said, “ (Josiah) wants to be a defensive lineman, so he’s going to hang out with the defensive line in practice.”

Chase Young, who could not participate in the training camp, had a surprise gift planned for the young fan. A jersey with no. 99 and the name ‘Desper’ was printed on it. Everybody in the room erupted in applause.

This wholesome moment got the fans reacting to the tweet. A user who sees a lot of changes since the time the franchise changed its name.

Back in 2020, the team went through a bleak time when they dealt with Rivers’ own cancer diagnosis, which was difficult to navigate given the global pandemic. With the perils of injuries getting to the Washington Commanders, it is refreshing to see them make memories with a kid who will not forget it for the rest of his life.
