Aaron Rodgers is having the time of his life in New York. The quarterback had the widest smile during the Jets OTAs despite harboring a calf tweak is something very unusual for the spectating Cheeseheads. Especially since Rodgers skipped Green Bay Packers‘ 2022 OTAs. Something that allegedly was the last nail in the coffin of his 18-year relationship with the Wisconsin organization. However, in a recent interview with the Athletic, the NFL world saw a no-holds-barred Rodgers laying out all the facts on the table. The truth and the lies, both.
In what has been one of the stormiest offseasons of recent times, the Packers sent their 4x NFL MVP to the NY Jets last month. The reasoning from the Green Bay camp has been a transition to move into the Jordan Love era. However, Rodgers’ interview proved that there was a lot more going on behind the scenes. So what happened between A-Rod and the Packers?

It wasn’t that long ago that Aaron Rodgers wanted to finish his career playing for the team that drafted him 18 years ago. The Packers shared the same feeling. They even signed their biggest franchise superstar for a three-year $150 million deal last year. However, things were way different from what appeared on the surface. The Packers ended the last season without making it to the playoffs after back-to-back NFC Championship appearances in the last 3 years. And many attributed this lack of chemistry to Rodgers missing out on the voluntary OTAs. The Super Bowl XLV MVP squashed those accusations in his recent sit-down.
“When I’m in, I’m all-in, and you wanna ride with offseason workouts? I won MVP without doing off-season workouts. Like, was my commitment any less then? I’d say not at all. How I come back to work, not just physically in good shape but mentally refreshed, is the best thing for me to have the season I wanted to have during those in Green Bay,” Rodgers said.
Aaron Rodgers credited the disconnect this offseason to the Packers not using FaceTime to call him.
“Everybody who knows me, when I’m out west, they know that’s how to get a hold of me.
So you can say whatever you want … but that’s the f—ing truth.”https://t.co/jogZIwYdYc— The Athletic (@TheAthletic) May 31, 2023
“I think that’s just a cop-out written to try and find something to disparage me about,” he added.
Rodgers even mentioned that there was a huge communication gap between GM Brian Gutekunst and his camp this offseason. But that wasn’t it. The problems started way back in 2020 before Rodgers won his back-to-back MVPs.
How did all the tension start?
Aaron Rodgers wasn’t expecting his franchise to start planning for the future when he was in the middle of consecutive MVP seasons. After allowing 285 rushing yards against the 49ers in the NFC Championship loss, the QB1 expected rush-blocking signings in the summer. However, Jordan Love’s arrival pretty much conveyed the franchise’s message to Rodgers.
The final tipping point came in 2022 when Titletown parted ways with their star wide receiver and Rodgers’ offensive weapon for eight years, Davante Adams. Adams wanted as much as DeAndre Hopkins’ $27.25 million annual package and got nowhere close to that number. “Are you serious right now? I’m the best receiver in the league and you’re gonna offer me less than Christian Kirk [$18 million per year],” Rodgers explained.

Clearly with A-Rod on the side, the NY Jets are not just playoff favorites but are also in contention for the Lombardi. Can Jordan Love pick up the reigns just like Rodgers did when the Packers traded Brett Favre to the Jets 15 years ago?
