Todd Bowles, head coach of Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led the team’s defense as coordinator in 2020 when Tom Brady joined and won Super Bowl 55. He succeeded Bruce Arians as head coach in 2023 upon Arians’ retirement. However, not much is known about the HC and his personal life. He, recently, unveiled the untold story of his journey toward a promise made by him to his late mother, ingrained in his mind for 14 years.
With the dawn still hours away, he rises at 3:15 am, fueled by the pursuit of two passions. One is the world of football that consumes his days, while the other thrives in the early morning silence, a journey to complete his degree, a story of dedication and sacrifice that inspires us all.

In memory of his late mother Joan Bowles, who passed away in 2009, he fulfilled a promise. Leaving Temple University in 1986 for an NFL career, he resumed his degree pursuit in 2020 through online courses. He prioritized the ceremony, missing the second day of the Buccaneers’ rookie camp. She expressed her desire for Bowles to complete his degree. This simple yet significant request remained ingrained in Bowles’ mind for years. He attempted to fulfill it at various universities but encountered obstacles along the way.
“Before she passed, she simply said she wanted me to do one thing. I asked her what, and she replied, ‘Finish my degree.’ That request stuck with me for a long time. I tried to obtain it from one university, but I kept encountering problems,” Todd said in remembrance of his mother.
Eventually, Bowles enrolled at Mount St. Mary’s and began taking classes. Coincidentally, this was the same year the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl. Despite his demanding role as the defensive coordinator for the team, Bowles remained committed to his studies. He attended classes during the pandemic, utilizing virtual platforms like Zoom to balance his responsibilities.
“It was purely coincidental that the classes were held during the year we won the Super Bowl. I attended those classes. I took classes during the pandemic year while simultaneously fulfilling my duties as the defensive coordinator for the Buccaneers, conducting my job through Zoom,” said Todd.
Finally, the moment arrived when Bowles walked across the stage to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in Youth and Development, on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Todd graduated from Mount St. Mary’s University. When asked about the significance of walking across the stage on Mother’s Day weekend, Todd responded, “The fact that it was Mother’s Day weekend and knowing she was watching over me, I hope she smiled. It was a deeply gratifying experience.” He also said, “I did it for my mother and to have my three boys witness me walking across the stage.” The timing was significant as it fell on Mother’s Day weekend.

He was also asked how he managed to split his time like that, to which he revealed his dedication and sacrifice, woke up at 3:15 in the morning, focused on football-related duties but continued his learning journey by listening to podcast notes during his commute. “I get up at 3:15 in the morning, and I can work for about an hour and a half. Then I immediately transition to my football responsibilities and go from there. On my way home, I listen to some podcast notes, and we also stay up late to do some work. It was something I felt compelled to do”.
Even late at night, Bowles would stay up to work on his studies. Completing his degree was something he had to do because his mother had rarely asked anything of him.
