The National Football League has dominated the world of football for 100 years. Many leagues have come and gone, but none have been able to dethrone the NFL. But the competition is really tight in 2022. The XFL has risen from the ashes with the help of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. A fan-controlled league is also gaining some attention. But another American league has decided to make a comeback. 

The United States Football League, also known as the USFL, is making a comeback after 37 long years. The league did make some noise back in the day, but they failed to gain a loyal fan base. Now the time might be right for them to make some noise.

How does the USFL work?

The USFL has a ten-week regular season. They have two divisions with eight total teams. The North division includes Michigan Panthers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars, and Pittsburgh Maulers. The south division has teams like Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Orleans Breakers, and Tampa Bay Bandits.

Their first comeback season is set to kick off on April 16 with the New Jersey Generals taking on the Birmingham Stallions. Their inaugural postseason will take place in Ohio inside the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The semifinals will start on June 25, and the USFL Championship Game will take place on July 3, wrapping up the season. 

In the past, the USFL has given us some big NFL names. These names include the Buffalo Bills coach Marv Levy along with legendary players like Steve Young, Herschel Walker, Sam Mills, and many more. Fans are excited about the return of the USFL.

The NFL adopted a few rules from this league in the past

The USFL was known for its groundbreaking rules. These rules were so popular that the NFL could not help but adopt a few. Two of the main USFL rules that the NFL picked up were instant replay and coach’s challenge. And we all know how important these rules have become in the game of football today.
