The Kansas City Chiefs have arguably been the best team in the NFL over the past four years. Their appearance in four straight AFC Championships games, two Super Bowls, and a Super Bowl triumph in 2019/2020 further proves it. However, they’ll be without one of their best players in Tyrann Mathieu in the next season.
Everyone always talks about their explosive offense when it comes to the Chiefs. Along with Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes has tormented the opposition’s defense for the past four years. They have been often criticized for their poor defense throughout the Mahomes era in Kansas City.

One player on their defense who rarely received criticism was the ‘Honey Badger’ Tyrann Mathieu. However, he won’t be a part of their squad anymore as he is signing with the New Orleans Saints.
Surprisingly, his new contract with the Saints will guarantee him less money than he was getting at Kansas City. Nevertheless, he’ll be returning to his hometown in Louisiana.
Why is Tyrann Mathieu accepting a lesser-money contract with the Saints?
There was continuous uncertainty around the future of Tyrann Mathieu in Kansas City following the end of last season. He is already 29 years, and the Chiefs were looking for a younger player at the Safety position.
The Chiefs began the free agency by signing Justin Reid from Houston Texans as their new safety. Unsurprisingly, he was given a similar contract to what Tyrann will get from the Saints. The major advantage with Justin is that he is just 25 years old currently.

Tyrann Mathieu had previously claimed that he would have loved to accept a similar offer from the Chiefs, but the team didn’t offer him any new contract. This came as a surprise to many people, as Tyrann was considered an important player for them.

As a result, Mathieu’s best option left was to sign with the New Orleans Saints. He will go back to the city where he played during his college career for LSU. Even though the offer is very low for a quality player like him, he had to accept it, as it was his best option.

On the other hand, the Chiefs are kick-starting a new era without Tyreek Hill and Tyrann Mathieu. Notably, both of them have been a crucial part of the Chiefs’ success in the past few years. However, Mahomes and Andy Reid are ready to embrace this new challenge and are moving in the right direction following an excellent draft.
