Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu might be heading back to his home in New Orleans after the emergence of new reports. Mathieu recently met with the Saints hierarchy and only had positive things to say about them and their coaching staff. He admitted to having scenarios played in his mind of donning the black and gold jersey and marshaling their defense.

But the Honey Badger did ease the excitement of the fans by playing down any chances of joining them. Mathieu states, “Those guys have done a great thing. The last couple years, they’ve been like top-five in defense. I don’t think they really need me, but…”

He reveals the close bond with some Saints players like Cam Jordan and Marshon Lattimore and dreams of lining up alongside them. While the Saints saw some high-profile departures in the safety position, they did bring in cheaper alternatives to fill that void. It appears signing Mathieu will only be a luxury signing who might elevate their defense in certain aspects.
What might lead the Saints to sign Tyrann Mathieu?
The Honey Badger has been a trash-talking menace for players on the offensive side of football over the years. The Chiefs’ safety has shown his versatility to play all over the field. He can drop in coverage, press the line of scrimmage, or even blitz, which allows him to upgrade any defense. By signing him, the Saints might make a stout secondary much more multiple and scary.

Mathieu was also clearing up rumors about looking for a considerable payday with his new team. He does state his desire to sign with a team that makes his family comfortable and keeps them safe in uncertain times.
While he does maintain a desire to play for a championship contender at this stage of his career, the opportunities might be available for him.

He will be a veteran safety in free agency for the first time in his NFL career. He has a great chance and might be in demand for some of the best franchises in the NFL. While many teams have been linked with his services, a move to the Saints makes the most sense. He will be looking forward to playing in the 2022 campaign for himself and his family.
