Patrick who wears no. 15 for Chiefs, expressed his belief that the Cleveland Browns had a great interest in drafting him. Although he couldn’t confirm whether they would have chosen him, he was aware of their strong affinity towards him. Mahomes further revealed that Coach Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints, along with a few other teams, also held a favorable opinion of him.
The QB also revealed that he engaged in several discussions with Chicago Bears’ GM Ryan Pace throughout the draft process. However, it became apparent that the Bears had their focus on another quarterback, Mitchell Trubisky. “I talked to Ryan Pace a lot, honestly. Definitely, Mitch was their guy. They went and got them. But I met with them. I had the visit with them and everything.” Mahomes did meet with the Bears and went through the visit process.
For the final call, Mahomes believed that he would end up with the Kansas City Chiefs selecting him, citing their significant interest in him. But he also felt that both the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints had a genuine interest in him, “The Cardinals, they liked me a lot. And the Saints, those are the teams that really liked me.” In fact, he humorously added that had he has been drafted by the Saints, he would have been backing up Drew Brees, a future Hall of Fame quarterback. Mahomes acknowledged, “You’re fine with just backing him [Drew] up and learning as much as possible.”

The Chiefs decided and trusted Mahomes in 2017 to draft him because they saw his potential as a playmaker, his intelligence, and his fit in their offense. They made a move by trading two first-round picks and a third-round pick to secure the 10th spot, in 2017. They patiently developed Mahomes before unleashing him on the NFL.
