Cam Newton is set to make his return to the NFL, or so many fans hope. After sitting out for the entire 2022 season, Newton raised a couple of eyebrows as he expressed his desire to return as the backup quarterback. However, Newton is not thrilled about following any quarterback in the league. The 2015 NFL MVP with the Carolina Panthers has a very specific list of esteemed individuals he wants to play behind.
While his list featured some of the best starting quarterbacks in the league, ‘Super Cam’ did not include a certain Kansas City regular. Patrick Mahomes being left out of Cam Newton’s list has managed to confuse many within the NFL community, but maybe Newton does have sound reasoning behind his decision.

“There ain’t 32 guys that’s better than me,” said Newton on his Youtube channel.
Newton is willing to return to the NFL, even taking a backup position to some of the elite quarterbacks in the league.
Free agent QB Cam Newton says he's willing to be a backup for 9 #NFL QBs, none of which are #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes:
Deshaun Watson
Lamar Jackson
Tua Tagovailoa
Justin Fields
Malik Willis
Aaron Rodgers
Jalen Hurts

However, Patrick Mahomes being missing from his list has left the entire NFL confused. While names such as Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers make complete sense, almost every NFL fan can agree that Mahomes deserved to be on the list. Newton started his list with Deshaun Watson, and while the two have shared some fulfilling moments over the years, Cleveland acquiring Newton is a far-fetched conversation.
Being as well aware as he is, Newton further clarified that the omissions were either of players who are completely and fully entrenched and need no support or assistance from Newton or players that Newton would want to compete with. Maybe that’s the reason he left Patrick Mahomes off the grid, as the 2x Super Bowl MVP has already solidified his role as the number one option for the Chiefs.

Cam Newton’s phone might be continually blowing up ever since his comments. The NFL veteran’s recent participation in Auburn’s Pro Day workout just added to the excitement around him.
Newton’s list also included three rookie quarterbacks: C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson. Newton believes that with his extensive experience, he has the right tools to groom and nurture the budding talent these three young phenoms possess.
Defending his comments, Newton said, “If you think about the list, it’s really to the point, Some of those guys may already have penciled in backups that their franchises are okay with and that’s fine. I am just voicing my opinion and I am just getting the narrative out.”
