While all eyes last night were on the talented first-round prospects entering the 2023 NFL Draft, the attention shifted momentarily to a record-breaking contract signing in the league. Lamar Jackson trumped Jalen Hurts to become the highest-paid player in the league after the Baltimore Ravens finally agreed to his number, ending the long-drawn negotiation saga between the two sides. Understandably, everyone was relieved. And not just the ones in Action Jackson’s camp. Even former legends and GOATs breathed a sigh of relief.
Retired seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady reached out to LJ over Twitter shortly after his 5-year contract extension news broke. This happened hours before the first round of the NFL draft kicked off. And Lamar had a super humble response to TB12’s good wishes.

It’s been quite a rollercoaster ride for the 2019 NFL MVP, Lamar Jackson. The dual-threat quarterback has been one of the top signal-callers in his era. However, the matter of a max extension had been lingering for almost two years. Things looked to have gone beyond the point of salvage when the Ravens placed Lamar on the non-exclusive franchise tag this offseason. Unhappy with the $32.416 million payout in 2023, Lamar Jackson wanted out. That is, until last night, when the Ravens finally gave their QB what he wanted.

It hadn’t been a week since Jalen Hurts entered the history books as the highest-paid NFL player with a 5-year $255 million extension. Lamar Jackson went one-up on Hurts and took his spot at the top. The Ravens and Jackson agreed on a 5-year $260 million extension. Former NE Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend Tom Brady had some encouraging words for the Heisman winner. “Congrats, LJ. Big things ahead,” Brady tweeted.

Tom Brady had always been a throwing quarterback, having scored only 28 rushing touchdowns in his entire career. Lamar, on the other hand, is dangerous, both in the pocket and out of it. Besides their obvious difference in playing style, their financial demands also differed significantly during Brady’s playing time. Lamar Jackson and his agent/mother Felicia Jones held out for the best deal till the very end. Brady didn’t seem to care about the financial aspect that much.
$250 million-worth Tampa Tom even took a pay cut during the 2022 season when the Buccaneers restructured his 1-year $25 million deal to $15 million. This freed up nearly $9 million to get other effective weapons to surround Brady. “The more one guy gets, it’s less for the others. And for a competitive advantage standpoint, I like to get a lot of good players around me,” TB12 explained on the Jimmy Kimmel Show in 2019.

Lamar Jackson also got his pieces this off-season. Odell Beckham Jr. arrived in the free agency. And then the Ravens drafted talented wideout Zay Flowers in the first round last night. What a time for the Purple and Black Army. The only thing that can make this feeling better? A Vince Lombardi trophy for Baltimore.
