Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers endured a difficult outing in the NFL last year. The Super Bowl LIV runner-ups started their campaign as outside favorites to go all the way once again.

However, injuries to key players over the course of the season hampered their goals of making the NFL Playoffs. But one positive from their dismal 2020 campaign was the offensive lineman, Trent Williams.

The former Washington man arrived in The Bay on a 1-year deal last year. After a shaky start to his 49ers tenure, Williams went on to have one of his best seasons in the NFL.

The 8-time Pro Bowler was a free agent this summer. However, GM John Lynch had no plans of letting the proven star leave. The 49ers signed Williams to a mammoth 6-year extension worth a reported $138 million on Wednesday.

Trent Williams becomes the highest-paid OL in NFL history

His new deal will see him become the top-paid offensive lineman in the league’s history. From the $138 million, $55,100,000 is guaranteed. In addition to that, Trent Williams will also receive a $30.1 million signing bonus.

Williams spent 9 years with the Washington Redskins (now Washington Football Team) before joining the 49ers in 2020. The NFC West acquired 32-year-old Trent in exchange for a 2020 5th-round pick and a 3rd-round selection in 2021.

After entering free agency, he was reportedly being courted by the Indianapolis Colts this offseason. But he ultimately gave a long-term commitment to San Francisco as they aim to bounce back from a tumultuous 2020 season.
