Everyone knows what a great coach Bill Belichick is! His partnership with Tom Brady in the New England Patriots brought numerous accolades to the team, including six Super Bowl victories. He is a man with a talent for strategic plays and exceptional decision-making skills. Perhaps, it’s this knack for making the right decisions that has led to the persistence of his infamous “one-day curse” haunting the New York Jets.
As it’s no secret, Aaron Rodgers may not be able to play for the rest of the season due to his Achilles tear sustained during a game against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. The Jets, who last won a Super Bowl (III) in 1969, had aspirations of reliving that glory with A-Rod. However, destiny appears to have different plans for the Jets. But, have you ever pondered what might have happened if Belichick had stayed with the Jets years ago? Probably, they might not have endured such a lengthy championship drought. Could it be that Belichick’s supposed curse is the reason the Jets haven’t won another Lombardi trophy yet?

Over two decades have passed since head coach Bill Belichick made a sudden and unexpected decision. On January 3, 2000, Belichick was appointed as the coach of the Jets, stepping into the role previously held by Bill Parcells. His official introduction was scheduled for a press conference the following day. The transition appeared to be going smoothly for New York. While the franchise was parting ways with its charismatic coach, they had a cerebral successor hand-picked by Parcells himself.
On his very first day as a Jet, Belichick donned the team’s jersey, attended their camp, and spent the entire day practicing with the players. However, after returning from the practice field, something changed. Belichick altered his attire and hastily penned a shocking resignation note on a napkin. Without any prior warning, he also delivered one of the most startling moments in NFL press conference history by publicly declaring, “I resign as the HC of the NYJ.” This announcement sent shockwaves throughout the NFL community, and for many years, the reasons behind his decision remained a mystery.

In November 2020, after the New England Patriots’ thrilling 30-27 victory over the New York Jets in Monday night football, Bill Belichick reflected on his decision to resign as the Jets’ head coach. He called that moment as one of the “defining moments” of his career and continued, “That combined with Robert (Kraft) giving me the opportunity to come here, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. That wasn’t a good situation for me, and I didn’t want to be part of it, so I wasn’t.”
Belichick served as Bill Parcells’ associate head coach in 1996 and the Patriots during that time won the Super Bowl. Belichick’s resignation from the Jets’ new ownership in January 2000 was explained by “various uncertainties” with that organization. He underlined how crucial it is to have backing from a franchise’s top levels. Additionally, he emphasized his close friendship with Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who arranged a deal with Belichick and even forfeited a first-round selection in the process. This choice ultimately resulted in a prosperous period for the Patriots, which saw the signing of the renowned Tom Brady.
