The Dallas Cowboys have gone ahead and made a deal with the San Francisco 49ers. They’re giving up a fourth-round draft pick to snag the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft class. What’s the reason behind this move? Well, Lance, who was part of the team, left. He got picked to be the backup for the 49ers, playing second fiddle to Brock Purdy, who was nabbed in the seventh round in 2022. But the real question is, why did Dallas & Lance make this switch?

Seems like the deal is that Dallas’ second-string quarterback, Will Grier, hasn’t exactly been wowing the crowds during the preseason. So, the Cowboys are thinking about the future and seeing more potential in Lance, who could back up their main guy, QB1 Dak Prescott, with more oomph.

Dallas may or may not cry!

Now, don’t get it twisted. This doesn’t have anything to do with Dak Prescott’s position. The team is all in on Prescott being the quarterback of their future. They’re even gearing up to give him his third contract. But here’s the shocker – they’ll need to figure something out in the next year to manage Prescott’s colossal $59.5 million cap hit for the next season. Right now, he’s playing on this four-year, $160 million contract he signed back in 2021.

Now, let’s delve into Lance’s acquisition – securing him for a reasonably attractive six-figure amount resembles taking a chance on a player in need of a new beginning. Due to his rookie contract, the Cowboys are solely responsible for managing his foundational salary for 2023 and the base, along with roster bonuses, for 2024. This translates to slightly under $1 million for 2023 and slightly above $5.3 million for 2024.

Now, look at it from another angle. Grier is still chilling on the team, but his $1.08 million paycheck wasn’t locked in, so the Cowboys are actually saving a teensy bit of cap space for 2023 by bringing in Lance. So, probably the dots are connecting that way for Dallas’s future.

John Lynch on letting go of Trey Lance

A few hours after Trey Lance made his move from the Niners, someone popped the question: ‘Why let go of Lance now?’ John Lynch, the bigwig at the 49ers, weighed in, saying, “It’s a fair question and it’s something we talked a lot about internally.”

Here’s the scoop. The deal is that Brock Purdy is the top dog starting for the 49ers, and Sam Darnold beat out Lance to be the backup. To spell it out, Lynch said, “He needs to play to get better. And I think that’s going to be his opportunity. Play, I mean, ideally games. But play is running scout team, play is doing all those things. We weren’t going to have that.”

Lastly, according to NBC Sports, Lance’s $940,000 payday is off the 49ers’ books, but now quarterback Brandon Allen will take his spot, and his cap cost is set at $1,092,500.
