On February 12, 2023, Patrick Mahomes Sr. and Randi Mahomes proudly attended Super Bowl LVII to support their son as he played in the game. It was a thrilling match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, with the Chiefs emerging victorious with a close score of 38-35. However, before this memorable event unfolded, there was an incident that quickly went viral, involving Pat, a 52-year-old father, who ‘Lit it Up’ like Joseph Stalin, the former Soviet leader known for his affinity for cigars.

Stalin’s fondness for cigars can be traced back to their status as a symbol of power and authority in the Soviet Union. Similarly, in a more contemporary context, Mahomes Sr., the father of the Chiefs’ star QB Patrick Mahomes, found himself in the midst of a viral moment following the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals. After the Chiefs secured their victory, Mahomes Sr. addressed the incident involving the lighting of a cigar. Mahomes Sr. explained the ‘why’.

Patrick Mahomes’ father had a blast after the Chiefs’ 2023 Super Bowl win, lighting up a cigar and channeling his inner Joseph Stalin. The 52-year-old Mahomes Sr. had planned to bring a cigar to Kansas City and smoke it in front of his son and some friends if the team won.

I wanted to get the last laugh, so I told Patrick and a couple of our friends that I was going to bring a cigar to Kansas City,” Mahomes Sr. provided an explanation for his actions. “And when they won, I told Patrick I was going to light it right up, and smoke it.

He made good on his promise, sparking the cigar and enjoying the sweet smell of victory. He also posted a video of his celebration, cheekily calling the venue “Burrowhead” stadium, a playful jab at the occasion.

Mahomes Sr. later told Bob Nightengale of USA Today that he was “angry and annoyed” by the Bengals players who had renamed Arrowhead Stadium after their quarterback Joe Burrow. He said that his son, a former Super Bowl MVP, would never do such a thing. He also revealed that his friends joined him in the cigar-smoking fun, but they kept it off-camera and low-key.
