Jesse Kaye, the man who foresaw it all, one of the very few people who recognized the unmatched potential in Tom Brady, sadly passed away on Sunday at the age of 79. Kaye has had an admirable career as an NFL scout that spanned over 30 years. He signed numerous table toppers in the league and worked for various reputable teams.
The legendary scout was ruthless in his field. However, his legacy seems intertwined with his brief association with Brady. Kaye started his scouting career in 1989, but his passion for it grew way, way back. In his long career of scouting, he met countless athletes with potential, but he never put Brady at the top of the list.

We lost a legend today, a hidden gem rather. He loved what he did and found opportunities for many, many players. It was announced on Twitter about his demise. Kaye first found his interest in scouting after his daughter was born in 1981. He was browsing through numerous opportunities, but he also wanted to do something he could appreciate in the long run. While playing in the taxi squad of the Dolphins, he started his first scouting. Soon after, Kaye was hired by an NFL scouting agency named BLESTO. He worked for Green Bay right after, and he was very successful in working for the team as well.
Former Jets scout Jesse Kaye, who scouted for the team from 1994 to 2014, died yesterday, per reports. He was 79. He was best known for lobbying #Jets to draft Tom Brady in 2000 even after they had picked Chad Pennington. Sources have said Kaye gave Brady a third-round grade.

The former scout revealed that he signed Reggie White for the Green Bay Packers by convincing the Philadelphia Eagles, who weren’t even remotely interested in the trade. He further added that he convinced the management to meet him in a blizzard for the trade talk of White and a defensive player named Harry Galbreath. Furthermore, he claimed that signing Reggie was the biggest career break in his life. Due to his relentless pursuit, Kaye was coveted among the top teams in the league and soon left for the Jets to work as a scout. And while working for the Jets, he finally got to know about Brady.
There will always be thousands of draft stories for the GOAT of the NFL, even in the coming years. But this one is a little different. During Kaye’s daughter’s potential college visits, he decided to watch the team QB‘s film, as he was always looking for potential talent. He knew it before everyone. When no one was impressed with Tom Brady’s moderate college stat, he had a hunch that led to his quarrel with the Jets.
The Jets scout pushed real hard
Kaye wanted Brady on the team only after watching his video. He felt like the college rookie was the missing puzzle in the Jet‘s roster. And he definitely pushed the management so that the team could consider the Michigan QB. But the Jets couldn’t draft Brady as they had already drafted Chad Pennington as their first pick. Later Brady was drafted by the Jet’s divisional opponents, the Patriots, and the rest is history.
Although Kaye wasn’t able to sign Brady, he understood the Jet’s requirements and made peace. The fans were heartbroken at his passing and also filled with rage for emphasizing that he will only be remembered for Brady. Few fans were overwhelmed by the former scout’s service to the league.
