As the renowned British author once said, “Talent is nothing without persistence.Tom Brady is the finest exemplary figure of this statement, the legendary quarterback, that the world will tell tales about forever in the future, wasn’t the best player when he started. Although he describes his High School plays as “efficient“, the freshman year of his college was spent in a just realization that he isn’t the best anymore. For that reason, he worked really hard to be the best.

Sophomore year was when he actually got the chance to enter the field, being the seventh quarterback on the depth chart. Yes, you heard it right, there were six other QBs who were doing better than him. But he was used to this, because getting into the University of Michigan wasn’t a smooth road for Brady, due to his father’s crucial ‘miss’ during his high school days.

In his recent appearance on the PBD Podcast, Brady talked about how he wasn’t a high recruit. Mainly because he stated that he had a few physical deficiencies at the time. Moreover, he also gave another reason behind him not being a high recruit. He stated that at that time, it wasn’t as easy to provide evidence of one’s great plays during high school games. So, his father used to record all of his games on a VCR tape.

He said, “This was my dad with a camcorder and everytime the ball was thrown, he’d focused on me, right? And the ball would go this way, and he’d stand up and the camera would go to the left, and he’d be watching and he’s start jumping out, ‘Goal!’ So, of course, we miss like every important throw that I had in High School.” This definitely cost him the scholarship with the great colleges like UCLA and USC.

But later down the line, he was taken in by the University of Michigan, all by the courtesy of Bill Harris. Since he pitched Brady to the institution after watching his play on those VCR tapes.

Bill Harris spotted the potential of ‘Tom Terrific’

Brady and his father had high hopes for the University of South California. Especially during the time when they were looking around for colleges for Brady’s further studies. Even though he never even applied to any colleges. But the USC head coach, John Robinson, didn’t show much interest in Brady. Then Bill Harris got his hands on Brady’s recordings, and instantly Harris could see the future in the kid. So much so that he himself talked about this remarkable moment in history himself.

He said, “So I was the first person to look at it, and I liked what I saw. Then I showed it to Kit Cartwright, who was our quarterback coach. Kit said he looked pretty good.” Even the UM head coach, Gary Moeller, liked what he saw on the tapes. So, Harris instantly paid a visit to the Brady family, and he could see the fire burning inside the New England Patriots star.
