Former NFL legend and HOFer TE Shannon Sharpe was not holding back his criticism for Baker Mayfield. Sharpe believes that the release of wide receiver Jarvis Landry was because of the inability of Mayfield to get the job done with the weapons available to him. The comments by Sharpe seem to be a reflection of the division among the Browns fanbase about Mayfield’s tenure with the franchise.

The former No.1 overall pick was apparently the QB of the future for Cleveland. However, his disappointing performances during the 2021 NFL campaign have sparked debate among stakeholders about his abilities. And doubters pranced on.

Sharpe, an NFL analyst on the FS1’s Undisputed, was seen calling out the Browns QB for his inability to maximize two of his best weapons in WRs Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry. He got the opportunity to throw to prime pro-bowl caliber WRs. And he missed to even make a mark in the playoffs.

While talking about Mayfield on the show, Sharpe states, “It reflects poorly on him. Everybody that came there, Odell was a #1 on the Giants. Jarvis came from the Dolphins where he was a #1 receiver. Now all of a sudden, Baker Mayfield was supposed to elevate these guys as opposed to them getting cut… He’s just not that guy, he’s not good.

He supports his argument about Landry’s release by stating that he was injured and suffering from a knee issue. He believes it to be a reason that Landry was unable to put up the numbers. Sharpe believes that Mayfield at times gets a free pass with injury, unlike Landry. Sharpe also states that even the organization themselves are looking to move on from him.

The Browns recently were reported to be involved in talks to sign Texans QB Deshaun Watson as a sign of the end of the Mayfield era in Cleveland. He also insinuates that fans in Cleveland and the organization feel that he hasn’t been performing as expected. While the move for Watson will be audacious, it is a scenario that isn’t far from the realm of possibilities.

The Browns QB has been performing for the team in spells, and injuries did play a part in how the Browns derailed last season. While Sharpe makes some valid arguments, the Browns fans will be looking for a smooth and quick resolution.
