Recently, Trey Lance had become a talking point among NFL analysts. With Jimmy Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery creating his absence, the 22-year-old Lance was named as his replacement. However, observers have already labeled him as something more than a replacement.
Even though Jimmy and his $24.2 Million contract remain on the roster, the 49ers are likely to pick Lance as their starting QB because of certain reasons.

The Former Packers receiver James Jones appeared on the NFL Total Access and compared the QB to the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers. He said, “I think he’s going to be in that category, years down the line, talking about him like we talk about Patrick Mahomes & Aaron Rodgers.”

Rodgers’ former receiver Jones made bold claims, pointing out his traits and capabilities. He also mentioned the role 49ers HC Kyle will play in grooming the young QB. He said, “Everybody’s saying he has superstar written all over him. There’s nothing he can’t do. He can make plays with his legs, and really strong arm. Kyle Shanahan’s going to put him in really good situations.”
How has Trey Lance fared so far in the games he has played?
In his first season (2021) after being drafted from North Dakota State University, Lance played six games for the 49ers. Further, he managed to score 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, with a 3-3 record. In addition, he completed 603 passing yards as well. This record has led Jones to believe that it is worth it to keep the second-season QB around.

The replacement’s skills were put to test and display in his first season. He rushed for 89 yards on 16 attempts in his first start against the Arizona Cardinals. He showcased throwing for 248 yards on passing during his second start against the Houston Texans.
