When was the last time fans flocked to the theaters to watch their favorite movie? The movie theater industry suffered huge losses due to the pandemic and it has never been the same again. Tech-giant Apple wants to bring back the old days. But an NFL veteran has thrown their new $1 billion bet, to try and do that, under the bus.

Marcellus Wiley does not hold back on his opinion. He recently pointed the gun at Apple on reports of their planned future investment into movie theaters. But what is the bet and why does Wiley think it is a bad idea?

Marcellus Wiley takes down Apple

Marcellus Wiley can talk about anything under the sun. He kept that spirit going when he discussed Apple’s new $1 billion investment into movie theaters. According to the NFL veteran, it will take more than that to get him back to watching movies the old way.

“I knew theaters were in trouble even before the pandemic. Why? Because when I saw them doing the archlights and it went from arch lights to those real luxury theaters all across the country,” Wiley said on his ‘More To It’ podcast.

The former Buffalo Bills defensive end wasn’t happy with the price rise for the moviegoers. He believes that it was due to those prices that the theaters are struggling post-pandemic.

“To me that wasn’t them saying, ‘oh we’re gonna make the experience better’ because better is also a lower price. You know, the prices went 4X,” the former Pro Bowler said.

The Apple plan

Apple isn’t exactly investing money into movie theaters. They are planning to spend a billion dollars to make movies that aim to bring people back to the theaters. The tech giant, which has already ventured into streaming services with Apple TV, has approached movie studios with their plans, according to a report.

Amazon has also taken a similar approach and has committed to producing at least 12 to 15 films for theatrical releases. The company has also acquired MGM Studio in a deal worth $8.5 billion.
