Every player in the NFL wants to win, no matter which team he plays for. But there are some teams that have historically not been great in the league as far as the records go. The NFL has all the ups and downs that make the league interesting to both fans and players. One of Patrick Mahomes’ teammates, who won the Super Bowl ring in his first season with the Kansas City Chiefs, re-lived some painful memories from his life before he came to Arrowhead Stadium.

Safety Justin Reid played his four years of rookie contract with Houston Texans after getting the call in the 2018 draft. While there, he had just one playoff appearance that ended in a heartbreaking fashion. In a recent chat for a podcast, Reid talked about the downs he faced in Houston and how they made him a better player. And that includes the painful playoff loss to the team which picked him up after his stint with the Texans.

Houston Texans haven’t done well in the league historically. While talking about his time with the franchise, safety Justin Reid remembered the hope after making the playoffs in the 2019 season, his second with the team. Then he also remembered the hurt that the loss to the Chiefs caused.

“I’ll say this man like in the moment that sh*t hurts. You know I mean, going through the ups and downs. We’re in Kansas City for that playoff game. We were up by 24 points and then ended up losing about 20 points. I say the only way that it made it better for me is I think it made me a better leader. And that I got to tell the story about it to other players,” Reid said in ‘The Pivot Podcast’.

Reid probably told the same story to his Chiefs teammates to motivate them when they were down at half-time during their Super Bowl LVII win. He also talked about his last year in Houston when he probably knew that the team wasn’t going to win. But he put on a show every week because ‘it is more than just this year’.

After his time in Houston, Justin Reid joined the Chiefs in the 2022 offseason. And he felt the change in culture almost instantly. The safety praised how everyone, including the coaching staff and the players, is ready to do things beyond their job description for the team.

Coach Andy Reid had a message for everyone as the safety came into the team. They were going to start the season in Arizona and end it right there. And they did exactly that. The Chiefs won the Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium and Patrick Mahomes led an incredible comeback, probably inspired by the safety’s story. That earned the QB a Super Bowl MVP, along with the league MVP.
