Having a football background, Simpson was also a weightlifting and tennis nut. Perhaps that’s why he decided to discuss a legendary tennis player who made history as the first and only transgender individual to compete in both the men’s and women’s tournaments at the U.S. Open during Simpson’s era. The former star running back, known for his controversial personal life that often overshadowed his achievements in the NFL shared his views on the ongoing transgender debate in America.

Just days after, a close friend reported that O.J. Simpson had been hospitalized, and the former Buffalo Bills player took to his Twitter account to deny any such media reports. Once again, he expressed his opinions on transgender participation in women’s sports, stirring the waters of controversy on Tuesday.

Former San Francisco 49ers player O.J. Simpson recently entered the ongoing controversial debate in America. In a new Twitter clip, Simpson addressed a topic he had been trying to avoid but eventually couldn’t stay silent on any longer. Reflecting on his tennis-playing days, he recalled, “I remember years ago when I was a tennis player, and I saw Dr. Renée Richards compete.” Simpson pointed out that while Richards, a transgender woman in her 40s, was allowed to compete against women according to court rulings, she wasn’t an exceptional player as a biological male.

Simpson emphasized, “If you’re born a male or a female, I don’t think it’s fair in sports to have them competing against one another.” He added, “Give them their own category. Let the trans compete against trans, the female against the females, and the male against the males.” This discussion unfolded following U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe’s support for trans athletes on the national team and Martina Navratilova’s opposition to trans women participating in women’s sports.

Ongoing controversial drama on trans players

The participation of biological males in women’s sports has become an intensely debated and divisive issue in the United States. According to the latest polls via Outkick, a majority of Americans (69%) believe that athletes should compete in the gender they were assigned at birth rather than based on their gender identity. In a recent interview with Time magazine, Megan Rapinoe expressed her view that lawmakers were infringing on people’s humanity by attempting to regulate transgender athletes. She even stated that she would welcome a transgender woman replacing a biological female on the U.S. national team.

However, tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who was coached by trans tennis player Richards, appeared to have a different perspective. Despite her advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, Navratilova opposes transgender women competing against biological women in sports. She suggested the creation of separate categories, such as “biological female,” “biological girls,” and an “open” category, in response to World Athletics’ recent announcement. Regarding her coach Renée Richards, her journey is noteworthy. In 1953, Richards initially entered the men’s draw at the U.S. Nationals as Richard Raskind. However, twenty-four years later, after undergoing sex surgery she adopted the name Renée.  Thereafter, she competed as a woman at the same tournament, (now called the US Open).
