When you think of great athletes, names like NFL GOAT Tom Brady, NBA legend Michael Jordan, golf star Tiger Woods or even tennis star Serena Williams are very common. It is because these athletes have built such successful careers for themselves that their names echo in their respective sports. The choice of the greatest athlete differs according to the sport that they follow. But women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe had a very different name in mind when talking about the greatest athlete in the history of sports.

The 37-old-soccer star left fans shocked after recently disclosing who she thinks is the greatest athlete in the history of sports. And it did not include any of the legends mentioned above. In fact, her favorite was someone who would have been a hard guess for fans all over.

In a recent episode of the Paper Route podcast on I Am Athlete, Brandon Marshall, and Co were discussing the storm Megan Rapinoe recently stirred on social media after announcing who she thinks has the best sports career in history.

This happened on Sunday when the WNBA team, the Seattle Storm, was celebrating the 42-year-old star Sue Bird. During the celebrations, Rapinoe, who is also engaged to Bird, said that the WNBA star has, “Arguably the best career that anyone has ever had in the history of any sport ever.” While Marshall and Co recognized Sue Bird for her own WNBA achievements, he questioned whether Rapinoe placing her own fiance ahead of Brady and the others is “being biased or is there something to this?”

Sue Bird and her glorious WNBA career

Bird went on to have quite a successful career after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2002 by the Seattle Storm. She has won four WNBA championships, five Olympic gold medals with the USA’s women’s basketball teams, and was even selected 13 times to the WNBA all-star team. Apart from this, she has also solidified herself as the league’s all-time assist leader. On Sunday, her No.10 jersey was retired by the franchise to celebrate her achievements as a Seattle Storm legend. And this is when Megan Rapinoe, who is engaged to Sue Bird since 2020, made the claim during her serenading speech celebrating Bird’s career. And this has caused quite a storm amongst fans on social media for placing Bird above all the other notable top athletes in the history of sports.
