The Chiefs took down the Jaguars 27-17 but not everything went according to plan. Arrowhead Stadium waited in rare silence as wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster lay helplessly on the field after taking a hit from the Jags’ defensive back Andre Cisco.
Smith-Schuster was knocked to the ground in the second quarter, missing the rest of the game. The wide receiver was put into the league’s concussion protocol.
Patrick Mahomes makes a statement
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes opened up about the impact of Smith-Schuster’s hit. Mahomes said that it helped that they saw Juju moving around after the game. He also stated that it was reassuring to see the receiver with a smile on his face, making the team not worry too much about the situation.
The quarterback also said that they obviously did not want such kinds of hits to happen.
Taking onus Mahomes also said,“…I take it upon myself too because I’m leading him and throwing him the ball kind of into that hit. So, it’s definitely a bad feeling for me as a quarterback, but I was glad to see he was doing OK after the game.”

The former MVP also emphasized how hard it was to see the brothers he cared about getting hurt.
He added, “I’ve already built a closer relationship with JuJu. You want to make sure that he’s all right, so you’re always asking the trainers and asking everybody on the sidelines, like how’s he doing and everything like that?”

Mahomes mentioned the relief at being told everything was okay. He also added that bigger injuries are scary because as a quarterback he wants to make sure his squad is good to go.
The Chiefs will keep moving forward
The Chiefs are currently seated quite comfortably on top of the AFC West. Mahomes and the rest of the team will take on the Los Angeles Chargers without Juju Smith-Schuster. While the receiver’s absence will be heavily missed on the field, fans will hope that the quarterback has something up his sleeve.
