The San Francisco 49ers had a roller coaster of a season this past year. They had to deal with a lot of injuries from crucial players like Jimmy G and Trey Lance. While all hope had seemed lost after starting off the season quite well, Mr. Irrelevant had saved their day. Brock Purdy went on to take the role of the quarterback, and as a rookie, went on to perform some amazing feats.
As a first-year quarterback, Purdy was able to beat players like Brady with ease. He pushed his team all the way to the NFC Championship. Mr. Irrelevant was suddenly carrying the hopes of San Francisco on his back. Furthermore, he played his heart and soul until he literally tore his UCL during the game. However, now there are a lot of comments on whether this young rookie should start or not next season. Interestingly, some of those comments came from a former 49er.

Former 49er star and Super Bowl champion, Vernon Davis, had some interesting things to say about who should be the starting quarterback. Despite the amazing season, Purdy has had when he stepped up, Davis feels like Purdy is not ready to be the main play caller. Davis truly believes that the starting quarterback right now should be Trey Lance.
The ex-49er mentioned that Purdy is still not quite ready. He said, “He needs more time, and I think over time, it’s going to happen. We’re going to see him evolve and become a great quarterback.” via TMZ.
However, there have been other ex-players from the 49ers that do not agree with this brutally honest take from Davis. Former 49er and quarterback, Jeff Davis, has something else to say when the Purdy Lance debate is brought up.

Further debates on Purdy vs. Lance
Jeff Davis holds the exact opposite opinion as Davis. He has openly claimed that he feels like Purdy should be starting next year. The NFL old-timer sees Purdy’s performance as phenomenal and something worthy of earning the chance to at least start. However, it might just come down to who is healthier: Lance coming off a broken leg or Purdy coming back after a torn UCL.
In the end, the decision remains to be made by the coaching staff. Regardless of who is picked, this debate might just go on until the QB1 for the 2023-24 season is revealed.
