Soccer is a growing phenomenon in the United States, especially women’s soccer. With the US women’s national team racking up titles and breaking records, there is renewed attention toward club football opportunities for women. And Kansas City Current, along with Brittany Mahomes, wife of Patrick Mahomes, might just be the first to take a major step in the right direction.

Kansas City Current is a women’s soccer club participating in the Women’s National League Soccer (WNLS). It is co-owned by Chris and Angie Long. The newly established club brings women’s soccer back to Kansas City. But this time, it has some notable backers.
One of the stakeholders in the club is Brittany Mahomes, former professional soccer player and wife of the Chiefs’ star QB Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes has also dipped his toes in the ownership trend. He owns a minority share in the MLB franchise Kansas City Royals, which he purchased in 2020.
Brittany Mahomes’ soccer career mostly spans her college years. She also has one championship-winning professional year at Ungmennafélagið Afturelding (UMFA), Iceland. Her husband and Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes has one Super Bowl victory to his name and is one of the best QBs in the NFL.
Brittany Mahomes and Kansas City Current Owners make history
What Brittany Mahomes and the Longs did next is getting them praise from all over. On October 7, the Kansas City Current owners broke ground to construct the world’s first stadium dedicated solely to a women’s soccer team.
The stadium is being built in the Berkeley Riverfront Park, next to the ‘Heart of America’ bridge. Fans expect that they complete the $70 million construction project in time for the 2024 season. It is projected to seat 11,500 spectators.
“All it took was coming down here and walking around,” Angie Long says. “Don’t you feel it, how special and amazing this location is? It’s hard to imagine another spot when you’ve stood right here.”
On Twitter, the response to this historic moment has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive.
Such a historic night!
