WR Hines Ward is a Steelers legend and record holder. He played his entire 14-year NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is a Super Bowl champion. Ward is not only an accomplished player on the field but has also been active in shows post-retirement. Moreover, after retiring, he has had experience coaching.

Ward’s coaching experience led him to be considered for a crucial coaching position in one of the NFL franchises. Earlier this year, he interviewed for the vacancy of Head Coach, alongside a few others, after a major team sacked their coach for their below-par performance in the 2021 season.

Ward interviewed for the position of HC at the Houston Texans after they fired their HC David Culley for a terrible season. The Texans finished the season 4-13, which led to Culley losing his job at the helm after just one season. Despite Culley being a successful coach in the NFL, the Texans struggled under his tutelage and eventually had a poor season, losing their last match against the Titans.

The Steelers legend was one of the multiple candidates interviewed by the Texans for the vacancy. During the interview, Ward was a special assistant to the HC at Florida Atlantic.

He initially also worked with the wide receivers coach, Joey Thomas, and was later appointed to the role himself. The Texans tweeted about the interview on their official handle. Apart from these, the former WR also had coaching experience with the Steelers and the New York Jets.

Hines Ward- A career in figures

The Steelers drafted Hines Ward in the 1998 draft. The WR played for 14 seasons with them, winning the Super Bowl twice. Further, Ward was voted MVP of the 2005 Super Bowl, putting up five receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown.

The WR is also a four-time Pro-Bowler and has multiple receiving records to his credit. He recorded career totals of 12,083 receiving yards, 428 rushing yards, and 86 touchdowns.

His exceptionally aggressive style of play led to a new rule in the NFL, the Hines Ward Rule.

Ward’s credentials for the Texan’s job were certainly near perfect. He had an amazing track record as a player and previous coaching credentials. However, he did not get selected for the role. The HC position went to Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
