Following the triumphant victory against the 49ers in 2020, the Chiefs knew they had to keep Patrick Mahomes around. They soon signed him to a decade-long extension worth $450 million, with potential incentives adding $53 million more. At that time, it became the biggest deal made in the sports industry, sending shockwaves all throughout the world. However, the happiness of that remarkable deal was short-lived, no thanks to the soccer legend, Lionel Messi.

After spending almost 15 years with Barcelona, LM10 finally signed an extension worth a lucrative amount. The actual price tag was initially kept secret by both the team and the athlete, creating suspense. But when the details were finally disclosed, it wasn’t a pleasant sight for the NFL star.

Just weeks after leaving FC Barcelona and a few months before joining PSG, documents about Messi’s Berca deal were leaked in the newspaper. The deal was claimed to be worth a staggering $670 million, with incentives provided for only four years. Compared to the NFL star’s annual salary, the soccer legend was getting compensated nearly triple the amount. Moreover, since Messi’s deal was finalized before Mahomes’, it’s safe to say that Mahomes’ deal was never at the top.

A lot has changed since then, except for Mahomes’ contract. Leaving aside the soccer superstar, the 2x MVP can’t even compete with athletes from his own league in terms of net worth. With a net worth of only $40 million, the reigning league MVP is nowhere near the top of the list. Despite spending 7 years in the league, the NFL star has yet to amass a net worth that would land him in the top 10, with the last placeholder having a massive $145 million net worth. Additionally, with teams constantly trying to keep their quarterbacks happy, Mahomes no longer has the upper hand when compared to others in the league with higher annual pay.

There’s no doubt that the 2x MVP has been dominating the league in recent years. However, despite their recent Super Bowl victory, the star quarterback is still considered underpaid. With an annual salary of $45 million, Mahomes ranks only seventh on the list of highest-paid QBs. Lamar Jackson holds the top spot, earning a staggering $7 million more than Mahomes. Even Jalen Hurts, Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson make more than the reigning league MVP.

Nevertheless, Mahomes has been smart with his money, investing in real estate and securing brand endorsements. At just 27 years old, he even partially owns the Kansas City Royals.
