This NFL season held immense promise for him, having signed a lucrative 3-year, $112,500,000 contract with the New York Jets after a trade from the Green Bay Packers. His arrival was met with immense love and support from teammates and the entire New York community. Fans and the passionate Green Gang had high hopes that, after 1969, the Jets would finally hoist the Lombardi trophy.
However, fate took an unexpected turn, robbing both him and the Big Apple of their joy.
