The Super Bowl Champions took a shellacking at the season opener. Before they hit the field on Thursday to face off against the Detroit Lions, the Chiefs already had the odds stacked against them, with important weapons like Travis Kelce and Chris Jones missing from their arsenal.
The match also proved unfavorable with Kadarius Toney’s disappointing performance, eventually ending the game with a 20-21 loss to the Lions. The wide receiver was totally out of his element, dropping three passes, one of which led to a crucial touchdown for the Lions. To make matters worse, Toney could only snag one ball for one yard on five targets. It was a bad night for the WR and the Chiefs.

Things did not go smoothly for the wide receiver this season. He missed most of the training camp after tearing his meniscus minutes before the first practice began. After undergoing the surgery, Toney also had to stay away from the preseason games. He returned to the lineup just days ago, at the season opener. However, Toney was quick to take the blame for the lackluster opening match.
“I talked to Coach. I talked to all the guys. That’s on me you know what I’m saying, like, at the end of the day, y’all count on me and allow me to make certain plays I gotta be there to do that. It ain’t no really, no excuse. You can’t blame it on none of that man”. Toney said in a presser on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old stressed that he is only focused on his next steps in the upcoming matches.

Toney was nabbed as a first-round pick in a trade with the New York Giants mid-season last year and was instrumental in leading the franchise to the Super Bowl LVII win. While the cards didn’t fall in his favor this time, the team has not lost their hope in the WR.

The Chiefs back the WR
Despite the apprehensions over his poor performance, Coach Reid does not put the blame on him. He is just perplexed, that’s all. “That’s just not his thing, He’s not a guy that drops balls. He’s got great hands, so we just got to keep working through it.”, Coach Reid said while speaking on the loss to the Lions.
He also expressed his faith in the wide receiver bouncing back, saying “The only way we’re going to get him back is by playing him,” Reid said. “I think you’ll see better as we go down the road here from him.” Patrik Mahomes also echoed the sentiments and attributed the WR’s performance to his missed training sessions following his injury.
