Philadelphia Eagles and their fans must thank whichever god they pray to. The team had a record-breaking year, after the Jalen Hurts-led squad made a run to the Super Bowl, and are amongst the championship favorites entering next season. But the Eagles dodged a massive bullet last summer, which could have changed their entire future. That bullet’s name is Russell Wilson.
Wilson, the starting QB for the Denver Broncos, was acquired by the ‘Orange Crush’ last summer in a blockbuster deal. But the latest reports have revealed that Wilson was almost a part of the Eagles’ roster after a trade for him was practically a ‘done deal’. As Russell attempts to redeem himself after an underwhelming season with the Broncos, let’s take a look at how the Eagles’ offseason failure, potentially saved them from disaster.

In an alternate universe, Russell Wilson would have suited up in Green and Silver in front of a raucous Philadelphia crowd. Thankfully for Eagles fans, they might never have to witness that day. Sports Illustrated’s Greg Bishop detailed the deal between Wilson and the Eagles which was set to take place last summer, before Russell nixed the offer.

The Eagles had been in talks with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire Russell Wilson, and the deal was reportedly in its final stages before Wilson backed out. While Eagles GM Howie Roseman may have been disappointed at the moment, he will surely thank his stars that the deal didn’t pan out eventually. Wilson eventually ended up with the Broncos, continuing the team’s playoff drought following their 2015 Super Bowl win.

What would Wilson in an Eagles jersey have looked like?
While the Eagles and their fans are sure glad that they avoided landing Wilson, it’s definitely interesting to imagine a universe where the deal goes through. The Eagles ended this season as the runners-up in the Super Bowl, after falling to the brilliance of Patrick Mahomes. But had they acquired Wilson, the deal would have surely included Jalen Hurts, the man who led the Eagles to their dominance over the league.
As the football world eagerly awaits the upcoming season, the shocking turn of events involving Russell Wilson, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Denver Broncos serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sport. Whether Wilson can regain his once-dominant form under the guidance of Sean Payton remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the Eagles will continue to embrace their newfound success with Jalen Hurts at the helm.
