During the fateful afternoon, Mallett, the former Patriots QB, was engaged in swimming when tragedy struck. Numerous reports emerged, suggesting that he was attempting to reach a second sandbar located approximately 150 meters away from the beach. Authorities, addressing these reports, emphasized that the rip currents were not as forceful as indicated in certain accounts.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office released body cam footage captured by a deputy following the tragic drowning incident. In the footage, the deputy can be observed swiftly responding to the scene, where they meet with another relevant authority. The video’s time stamp indicates 2:19 PM, precisely when the deputy is informed that Mallett’s body is being recovered from the water and brought onto a nearby boat.
Towards the latter part of the video, Sheriff Aden from the county’s office steps forward to make a statement. Expressing deep remorse, he acknowledges the incident as a tragic event where a life was lost in the water. He further emphasizes that there were no evident signs of hazardous waves or dangerous conditions that could have forewarned the tragedy. The sheriff concluded his statement with, “It just seems to be a tragic accident, and not something to with the condition of the surf or tide.”

The Authority did whatever they could
The lifeguards swiftly responded to the report of the former QB’s drowning, but unfortunately, he was found unconscious and not breathing. Lifesaving measures were also unsuccessful. The deputy’s body cam also shows his presence alongside an ambulance, fire truck, and police car 19 minutes after him running around the beach. Mallett was then taken to the hospital as soon as possible. However, he was presumed dead on arrival.
In the video, the sheriff explicitly stated that there were no red flags flying at the time of the accident. Instead, a yellow flag was present, indicating caution while swimming. This information dispels any notion of strong tides or hazardous conditions being a contributing factor to the incident.
