It hasn’t even been 5 minutes into the new season and Mahomes is already behind. The Kansas City Chiefs get their Super Bowl defense underway at Arrowhead against the Detroit Lions. The Thursday night kick-off brought forward plenty of headaches for the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes, especially in the form of absent Travis Kelce. But the entire game was overshadowed within minutes of the kickoff.

Contract extensions and new deals have been the talk of the town across the NFL. After Nick Bosa’s humungous contract extension, the pressure was on the Chiefs with respect to Chris Jones. But that’ll have to take a backseat as Patrick Mahomes falls behind once again.

Patrick Mahomes is widely regarded as the best QB in the league. This is seconded by the fact that he was offered the biggest contract in the history of the NFL back in 2020. He signed a record $450 million deal of 10 years, confirming him as one of the richest QBs in the league. But that status has been broken down quite a few times over the years. Now, there’s a new QB in town bragging about the richest QB tag in the league, Patrick Mahomes premier rival, Joe Burrow.

Moments into the new season, mere seconds, Joe Burrow and the Bengals dropped a bombshell on the Chiefs opening party. They announced the record deal for Joe Burrow that will bag him a total of $275 million over 5 years, with $55 million per year. Although it doesn’t outvalue the entire contract of Patrick Mahomes, over a 5 year period, Mahomes makes less than the Bengals QB.

Following the extension, the contract goes on to highlight the per annum value of Mahomes’ contract which is in the $40 million range. While he is still one of the highest-paid QBs, the new contracts in the league will turn heads. Many of his rivals are set to earn more than Mahomes which will raise his underpaid stature.

Joe Burrow’s new deal sees him jump to the front of the highest-paid QB list. After Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson sealed their bid for the highest-paid tag, it only took a couple of months for someone to one-up the competition. But that competition would be beaten by the latest champion of the highest-paid tag, Joe Burrow. Justin Herbert sealed his $262 million contract during the offseason, this was after Hurts claimed the tag back in April with his 255 million contract with the Eagles. But he was overtaken by Lamar less than a month from the $255 million landmark to step ahead of him with his $260 million contract with the Ravens.

While they eventually got beaten to it by Herbert, Burrow has overtaken the Chargers QB to start the season with a bang. His contract sees him step ahead of Patrick Mahomes, and the other two top QBs with his $275 million contract. Now that they have made their announcement with a calculated decision over Chief’s season opener, they will hope they can keep it going ahead.
