On Monday, the Chiefs managed to beat the Raiders in a tremendous comeback in the second half. Although many will remember this game for the amazing performances of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, many will also remember it for a lot of controversial calls by the referees. Many NFL players and experts criticized the call. Recently, Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce opened up about the call and the reaction of their head coach Andy Reid after that call.

In the ‘New Heights’ podcast, Travis Kelce talked about that controversial call on Chris Jones, as he said, “Unbelievable man, I don’t know how you can get a roughing the passer when you have the ball but that’s crazy.” Notably, the crowd started to boo that call heavily, which fueled the players. Speaking about the atmosphere after that flag, Kelce said, “I could live in that moment, man. Arrowhead is rocking like that and we’re putting up points and you know I mean the energy and the momentum is all on our side man, that’s one of the best feelings that you could ever have as a football player.“
Kelce then talked about their head coach, Andy Reid’s reaction on the sidelines. “It gets me more fired up when you see big red (Andy Reid) screaming on the sidelines, telling the ref, ‘come here’. For the most part, he doesn’t want to scream at him and yell at him, he just wants to hear why you called it, yeah, ‘explain yourself son’. Seeing him getting fired up on the sideline, that’s just, it amps everybody’s attention, just the awareness.”
It is worth mentioning that the call took place in the second quarter when the Chiefs were down by 7-17. Because of the call, the Kansas team received a 15-yard penalty, which could have cost them the game. However, Patrick Mahomes and Kelce rallied the team to get a famous victory over the Raiders.

Tom Brady received a similar sort of call on Sunday
During Sunday’s match against the Falcons, Tom Brady and the Bucs received a similar roughing call from the referee. Falcons defensive end Grady Jarrett received a roughing the passer call on Brady, which proved to be really costly for the Falcons, as they made a tremendous comeback in the fourth quarter.

Later Brady refused to comment about the referees’ decision, as many players and pundits slammed the 7-time Super Bowl champion. Meanwhile, the NFL issued new rules and regulations after Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered 2 concussions in a week. Hence, the referees will more likely make these sorts of calls to protect the quarterbacks further.
