The story of Michael Oher, a former Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman has inspired a hit movie, but the release of the movie triggered an unforeseen chain of events in his life.

“The Blind Side” a burden for former offensive tackle

“The Blind Side,” a 2009 biographical sport that was based on Michael Oher’s life drama, was directed by John Lee Hancock and achieved cinematic success. The movie stars Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy(Oher’s mother), Tim McGraw as Sean Tuohy(Oher’s father), and Quinton Aaron as Oher. However, for Michael Oher, the real-life human of the story, the movie’s impact has been far from uplifting.

Oher’s journey, showcased in the film, is a testament to overcoming adversity. But highlighting the burden after the success of the film, Oher told ESPN, “I’m not trying to prove anything, People look at me, and they take things away from me because of a movie. They don’t really see the skills and the kind of player I am. That’s why I get downgraded so much, because of something off the field.”

Michael Oher’s NFL career

Michael Oher concluded his illustrious journey in 2017, leaving a significant mark on the field. With the Baltimore Ravens selecting him in the 2009 NFL Draft, he played a vital part in their Super Bowl victory in 2013. Following this triumph, Oher embarked on a one-year tenure with the Tennessee Titans before joining the Carolina Panthers for a two-season stint. Oher’s 110-game NFL career showcased his prowess as an offensive tackle, yet it was his backstory that truly defined his popularity.

After retiring from the NFL, Oher established the Oher Foundation, where he directed his energy toward assisting communities in need and laying opportunities for underprivileged young men. Moreover, through his app Good Deeds, Oher continues to serve people by connecting them with communities and providing them with the essentials like clothing, school supplies, and more. As Oher’s journey continues outside of the gridiron, it serves as a testament to paving a successful way outside of the NFL.
