Scangarello has agreed to a three-year deal and is returning to coach college football after 2016. Prior to this, he has coached college football at Wagner, Northern Arizona, and UC Davis.

Rich Scangarello spoke with ESPN after signing on Friday. He said, “The timing was perfect for me to be a coordinator again, especially under a head coach who has a vision for the offense we will run.”

“(‘Mark Stoops’) belief in a pro-style system felt like the right opportunity for me and at the right time. I’ve watched UK play on film and I really like the quarterback Will Levis……… I think we will continue doing great things and I’m ready to get started.”

A veteran of several NFL teams, Rich Scangarello

Scangarello became the quarterback coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. Having previously served them in the 2017 NFL season, it was his second stint with the Niners.

Following the 2017 season, he worked briefly as an offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos and as a senior offensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles. Additionally, before joining the Niners in 2017, Scangarello worked as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders.

Scangarello is missing out on these opportunities

Scangarello returned to the Niners for the 2021 NFL season but has now signed with the Kentucky Wildcats as an offensive coordinator. As a result, he has given up the chance to work with the quarterbacks, Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Furthermore, it is a little stretch, but there is a possibility that Tom Brady will come out of retirement and join the Niners. The Niners have expressed interest in acquiring Brady if he ever wants to put to action his claim of ‘never say never.’ Therefore, one could say Scangarello could also renounce the possibility of working with the seven-time Super Bowl winner.

It is unknown whether the thought of missing out on these opportunities bothers Scangarello or not. Regardless, one thing is sure, the experience he will bring to the Wildcats team will certainly be beneficial.
