Ciara has always been a champion for women. The R&B sensation continues uplifting her fans, even leveraging her recent hit single to share a message of empowerment. Her recent venture continues celebrating women, as Ciara’s husband and $245 Million Denver Broncos superstar Russell Wilson joined her in bringing an elaborate piece of history to life.
It was 1996, and the Women’s basketball association announced: “We Got Next”. Soon, the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) to begin play in June 1997. The WNBA recently celebrated its 27th anniversary, still, the endeavor gets looked past often. Tackling this issue, Russell Wilson and Ciara joined hands with Amazon for an amazing storytelling session.

Ever since the beginning, every single team has won a WNBA title with the exception of one. The New York Liberty is the only team in the WNBA still longing for a title, and the recent sports documentary ‘Unfinished Business’ tells the story of the league through their lenses.
The title perfectly encapsulates the struggles Women’s basketball has had to face, while carefully capturing the New York Liberty’s continued thirst for a championship. The documentary aims to raise awareness around some of the heroes of the sport, and the Wilsons have tagged along for the ride. Ciara and Russell Wilson have been looking to expand their horizons, hence the ‘Why Not You Productions’. The executive producers collaborated with Amazon Prime Video, to bring to life the untold stories. Earlier Ciara and Russell Wilson took to Instagram to share their excitement around the project.

Ciara and Russell Wilson seemed overtly excited and confident about what the R&B sensation claimed was the ‘sports movie of the year.‘ Russell Wilson further bragged about the exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the documentary portrayed and a story that has never been told. Much like Ciara and Wilson, many relevant names in the sporting world have expressed their gratitude to the legends of the game and the tales are truly inspiring.

Over the years, WNBA players often face questions regarding their skills, their body, their profession, and their basketball IQ. Even in the 21st century, there are many who can’t wave goodbye to a caveman ideology that still limits how we view women. The challenges were even bigger during the inception of the WNBA as former Liberty star Teresa Weatherspoon chalked out in the documentary Unfinished Business.
“To have a league, we had to stand so that people know we belong, Some of them didn’t get contracts to go overseas,” recalled the now assistant coach for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. Witherspoon further shared that she would often spot WNBA players working in a Mcdonald’s during the offseason.

While the financial challenges have been answered to a certain degree, WNBA athletes still have to deal with the regressive mindset. As WNBA All-Star, A’ja Wilson recalled, “Probably when I got to college, that’s when it all started coming about, the whole ‘Stay in the kitchen’ and ‘She’s not as good as such and such.’” Such chants are common in the WNBA to this day, and hopefully, Ciara and Russell Wilson’s recent endeavors would help change the world for the better.
