Ja’Marr Chase has had quite a start to his NFL career. He has broken the record for the most receiving yards by a rookie previously held by Justin Jefferson. And is also the top contender for the Rookie of the Year honor. He is also just one win away from reaching his first Super Bowl in his first-ever season as a pro football player.
The No. 5 overall 2021 NFL Draft pick also ended his regular season totaling 81 receptions for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns. Furthermore, his partnership with former LSU teammate, Joe Burrow has proved to be one of the most productive QB-WR duos in the league this season.
All these achievements and recognition didn’t happen just by chance. The 21-year-old worked for it and proved himself time and time again. During a press conference, the rookie recalled his days in LSU, and with that, he shared an interesting yet motivational anecdote of his journey.
Ja’Marr Chase on being denied a chance to play a receiver
“I can tell you honestly, one of my best stories ever. Les Miles told me I couldn’t play receiver when I was coming out of high school,” Chase explained. “So that was something I had on my shoulders growing up. Les Miles told me he thought I could play cornerback.”
“I wasn’t really at the full position of receiver yet, so I just kept working at my craft in the offseason, waking up early in the mornings to work out. I just kept focused.”

However, Chase never played for Miles during his college years. Les Miles was fired from LSU in September 2016, making Ed Orgeron the next head coach. Chase played receiver under the guidance of Orgeron as a freshman. He finished his national championship 2019 season recording 84 receptions for 1,780 yards with 20 touchdowns.
