Aaron Rodgers and the Packers have been speaking in riddles concerning the developments of their future together. The Green Bay Packers seem to be enthusiastic about putting the Rodgers era behind them and beginning their journey with Jordan Love. And the hints that have been dropped make it hard for fans to even consider the possibility of the franchise’s willingness to retain the veteran QB.

For starters Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy referred to Rodgers in the past tense. He was asked about the similarity between former Green Bay QB Brett Favre and A-Rod. Murphy said, “It happens in our game. Very few players play for only one team. Obviously, Brett [Favre] had a great career here; Aaron [Rodgers] had a great career here.” The lack of enthusiasm and the team’s evasive responses are the biggest hints that something is afoot.

Murphy also explained that the Packers would honor Rodgers’ contributions. He said, “Regardless of what happens, Aaron will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he’ll be in our Hall of Fame. We will bring him back and retire his number. But this is one of the few things you go through as a team.” Murphy’s inclination to bring up jersey retirement during the current proceedings may be one of the biggest indicators of Rodgers’ inevitable departure. Letting go of a veteran QB who started out his career with the franchise is difficult. So why do the Packers want to head in that direction?

But, the QB won’t have to face the humiliation of being let go unceremoniously. The decision to stay or go may hinge more on Rodgers’ choice because of his contract with the team. While A-rod looks like he could be an asset to other teams, retirement isn’t off the table either. With big decisions to make, his hesitation to jump to a conclusion without evaluating all his options is understandable.
