Resurfaced Photo of Princess Diana Sporting Philadelphia Eagles Gear Draws Ugly Reaction From NFL Fans

A few pictures of Princess Diana in a Philadelphia Eagles jacket have resurfaced online, leaving the NFL community baffled. The pictures seem so inexplicable and for good reason. Most people would not be so surprised if it were a soccer jersey, but Eagles merchandise, really?

Princess Diana passed away in a tragic car crash back in 1997. Prior to her untimely demise, she had been spotted wearing this varsity jacket on several occasions mostly during school runs. But how did this come to be? Well, let’s find out.

The Green Love

The Philly fanbase was curious to know about the Princess Diana connection, and the story brought a smile to many of their faces. Marnie Schneider, the granddaughter of former Eagles owner Leonard Tose, appeared on a CBS Philadelphia pre-Super Bowl podcast to share the story of Princess Diana and the green jacket.

“She was not necessarily an Eagles fan, but she did love the colors of the Philadelphia Eagles,” Schneider said on the broadcast.

The story goes back to the Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly’s funeral back in 1982. Diana was the representative of the royal family at this particular funeral. Before getting married, Grace Kelly was a Philadelphia native, and naturally, Philly was well-represented at the funeral. Eventually, Princess Diana found herself in the company of Eagles statistician Jack Edelstein.

Edelstein told the Philadelphia Daily News “She thought football was like soccer. She asked, ‘What are your colors?’ I said, ‘Green and silver.’ She said, ‘Those are my favorite colors.”

Jack Edelstein ended up promising her Eagles merch, “We also sent her a beautiful Eagles jacket, made for her. It was Leonard Tose’s idea. He never went second-class,” Edelstein recounted.

The recently resurfaced pictures however sent NFL Twitter into a frenzy, while people opted to take the same old narcissistic approach to things.

Some of the reactions were, however, pretty wholesome and showed the appreciation people still have for her.

Princess of the people

Princess Diana’s humility and down-to-earth nature were a separating factor from the other royals. Unintentionally she appealed to the masses and even decades after her death, people still talk about her in high regard.

When a photo of Princess Diana wearing the jacket made the cover of a 1994 issue of PEOPLE, new team owner Jeffrey Lurie had the magazine cover enlarged so he could hang it in his office at Veterans Stadium.

These little gestures made Princess Diana memorable and probably the most accepted member of the royal family ever.
