Baker Mayfield is a dog lover through and through. Starting out his career in Cleveland, he is familiar with the ferocity of the ‘dawg pound. But now that he is away from it in Tampa, a joke or two about it won’t hurt anybody, especially so when the star of the show is Mayfield’s dog.

The QB gave his first interview after moving his base to Tampa in Florida as a Tom Brady replacement. And he instantly got trolled in the interview, for a similarity he apparently shares with his dog.

Baker Mayfield appeared on the ‘Rich Eisen Show’ as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB. And the conversation started around his love for dogs and the new canine member of the Mayfield household. When Eisen asked him about the name of the dog, he also revealed the story behind it.

“Furgus, you know what, he was named when we adopted him. So there is no rhyme or reason. I don’t know if it is short for Ferguson or what it is. But he acts like a Ferguson,” Mayfield told Rich Eisen.

While Eisen praised Mayfield for adopting the dog rather than ‘shop’ for it, he had another shot up his sleeve. It was the one that Mayfield kinda saw it coming but still had a good laugh about it.

“So not the only person on this phone who knows about being rescued from a dog pound,” Eisen joked with a reference to the ‘Dawg Pound’ at the home of the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns had Mayfield as their starting quarterback until the end of the 2021 season, but with the arrival of Deshaun Watson as their new QB, Mayfield had to move on from the FirstEnergy Stadium. When discussing this scenario, Eisen couldn’t resist making a joke involving Mayfield’s beloved dog. Well, it’s not the first time that the ‘Dawg Pound’ has come up with Mayfield.

Mayfield and the Dawg Pound

When Baker Mayfield went to the Carolina Panthers, he felt that he was wronged by the Browns. So just before the week one clash with his former team, he released some merchandise with a subtle reference to the Browns’ ‘Dawg Pound’.

The t-shirts depicted Mayfield as a Cowboy and a broken dog collar with a message. “Off the Leash” the T-shirts said, an obvious reference to the Browns’ release of the QB. The stint at the Panthers didn’t go quite as expected but that’s a totally different matter.
