Cleveland Browns were not well-ordained with quarterback talent in 2016, and there were rumors about signing quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The year also saw the hiring of a new head coach in Hue Jackson and the departure of starting QB Johnny Manziel. The Browns HC was keen on bringing the then-49ers QB to Cleveland in their attempts to shake things up.

In a Sports Illustrated report by Gary Gramling and Conor Orr, Jackson hoped to sign him when he was on the trade block with the Niners. Jackson was also in talks of becoming the Niners’ boss before becoming the Browns’ head coach. It appears he was a fan of Kaepernick’s style of play and wanted to give him the starting job.

While it was a plan that never came to find success, the reasons behind not signing him remain unclear. Kaepernick was also dealing with a left shoulder injury that required surgery after the 2015 NFL season. While it made him miss the last few games in 2015, whether it affected the trade remains only a rumor.

The possibility of what could have been for Colin Kaepernick

The Browns ended up signing Robert Griffin III from Washington that season and drafting QB Cody Kessler in the NFL Draft. But it was a consequential season for both the Browns and Kaepernick as they had their moments. Both the Niners and the Browns finished with terrible season records as they were without their starting QBs.
