Baker Mayfield is undisputedly an asset for any team he is on. The 2018 number-one draft pick has shown in the past that he is valuable on the field. However, for a first-pick, Mayfield’s value does not seem to be fully recognized. In his career as an NFL quarterback, Mayfield has moved around more than one would expect.

Mayfield had recently been released by the Panthers of his own will. The 49ers had showcased an interest in Mayfield. However, after certain information came to light, the 49ers decided to not pursue the option of picking up the first-pick quarterback.
49ers’ reason for not picking up Baker Mayfield
After Mayfield had been released by the Panthers, two teams had expressed interest in picking up the quarterback. The Rams and the 49ers were at the forefront of acquiring Mayfield, but he ultimately was taken up by the Rams. While he would’ve been a great fit in the 49ers’ program, they did not pursue him a lot. The reason behind not grabbing up a player like Mayfield was unclear until recent information came to light.
The 49ers’ main quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, had recently gotten a foot injury. It was speculated to be a Lisfranc injury. However, recently it was revealed that he was not as severely injured as speculated before. It was further announced that Garoppolo does not need surgery and with proper rest, he is likely to be playoff ready.
Sources: Doctors concluded today that 49ers' QB Jimmy Garoppolo does not need foot surgery, it is not a Lisfranc injury, and if rehab goes smoothly, he could have a chance to return in 7-8 weeks, making him a potential playoff contributor. pic.twitter.com/beYu1Pa9KU

After this news arrived, there was speculation that the 49ers did not bring on Baker Mayfield as Jimmy G is likely to be ready by the time playoffs roll around. This is speculated to be the real reason behind the lack of pursuit for Mayfield as the 49ers’ quarterback. Furthermore, certain analysts have voiced their opinion on Mayfield’s turbulent journey.
Analysts on Mayfield
On ‘The Undisputed’ show, Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless discussed the predicament of Mayfield. Sharpe mentioned that he felt for the young quarterback and his situation. He talked about the reason behind Mayfield’s request of being released and voiced out empathy-like words. He said, “Baker is he’s a guy and that’s all I’ve tried to explain to you I take no consolation I hate that the guy got released yesterday but he wanted this because he went from being a starter skip to all of a sudden he wasn’t going to even dress.” Sharpe spoke about the fall in hierarchy Mayfield experienced going from QB1 straight to the third string.
Sharpe was also correct in his prediction of Mayfield’s destination. On the show, he said, ” I’m gonna say the Rams just off the top of my head.” Undoubtedly, he proved to be right. With a fresh start, Mayfield will now be throwing the pigskin for the Los Angeles Rams. Only time will tell how will his season progress in LA.
