Losing a loved one is the hardest feeling to deal with. And the sadness only compounds when a parent loses a child. The Baltimore community has a lot of grieving to do as former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis received a heavier blow than any he has ever experienced before. Lewis’ eldest son, Ray Lewis III’s untimely demise has shaken up the entire footballing community. 

The Pro Football Hall of Fame pass rusher and 2x Super Bowl champion mourns the loss of his 28-year-old son along with his family. Lewis has three other sons and the entire family is going through one of the toughest phases of their lives. Rahsaan Lewis, Lewis’s middle child, left a heartbreakingly emotional post on his Instagram story, breaking the news of the tragedy.

A Brother’s heartbreaking loss

Days after the tragic passing of Tennessee’s multi-sport athlete and Arkansas football commit, Dion Stutts, the NFL world received another major blow this week. Former Coastal Carolina and Virginia Union CB Ray Lewis III passed away due to undisclosed reasons.

Kentucky Wildcats wide receiver Rahsaan Lewis had an excruciatingly hard time digesting the news of his elder brother’s passing.

“Really can’t believe I’m even typing this, but RIP, big brother. A true angel, I pray you’re at peace now because I know how much you were really hurting. I don’t and won’t ever have the words man cuz this pain right here. I love you,” the wideout wrote on his IG story on Thursday.

RIP my big brother. Hope you’re at peace now. I know you [were] hurting,” Rayshad Lewis, aka rapper Young Shad, wrote for his elder brother. Lewis’ daughter Diaymon also left her prayers. “You will always be my first love and truly are the definition of a quintessential brother. Go get your rest, baby, and I’m glad you’re at peace. Fly high baby,” she said.

Ray Lewis III shared a unique connection with his legendary LB father

Ray Lewis III, who also played as a running back and a special team member, played at his father’s alma mater in Miami for two years in 2013 and 2014. He appeared in nine games as a freshman for the Miami Hurricanes, recording 15 yards on four rushes and catching six catches over 47 yards. Lewis III didn’t receive too much playing time in 2014, rushing for 21 yards and catching twice over 14 yards of receiving. He transferred to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) for Carolina in 2015.

During his undergraduate career for the Carolina Chanticleers, Lewis III recorded 19 tackles and returned kicks. Ray Lewis’ son played his final collegiate year for the Virginia Union in 2017. There, he recorded 37 total tackles and three tackles for loss. Lewis III’s former coach at Virginia Union, Mark James, left his heartfelt condolences on Facebook. “Young man, it was a pleasure to bring you to Virginia Union. Ray Ray May God bless your family. Great young man,” he wrote.

In 2021, indoor football franchise Wyoming Mustangs signed the cornerback and safety. Mustangs coach Cedric Walker even credited Ray Lewis III for turning around the fortunes of the franchise that competes in the Champions Indoor Football League.”He was part of the beginning of the turnaround we had here in Gillette,” Walker wrote on his Facebook account after the news of the tragedy.
