Ozzie Newsome, who is the executive vice president in the Ravens organization, has admitted that the Lamar Jackson saga has its roots in the Deshaun Watson deal. He clarified that he has no problem with what any other organization does.
“Every club has to do what they have to do with contracts, with drafting…… I got no problems with that. I don’t worry about what other people do,” Newsome said on ‘The BIGPLAY podcast.

The ex-GM then revealed the Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti did talk about the influence of the Cleveland Browns QB on the deal.
“But, you know, our owner did say that contract did create some problems. We have to figure out if that’s the norm or an outlier. And we don’t know,” Newsome added.
Many reports had suggested that Jackson wanted a contract in the region of what Watson got last year. And while it is not a direct admission from the Ravens, Newsome’s statement underlines that the Browns deal did have something to do with Jackson’s fallout with the Ravens. Lamar Jackson was the future of the Ravens franchise. He had proved himself as an elite quarterback with some consistent performances over the last five years. The QB even won the NFL MVP in just his second season in the league. But everything turned upside down once he sat with the Ravens to discuss an extension.
Various reports have suggested that Jackson wants a healthy component of his new deal as guaranteed money. While nobody can specify the exact demand, Newsome’s admission points the needle in the direction of the Watson contract. Jackson has even turned down a contract with a $133 million guaranteed component.

The standoff has resulted in the QB asking for a trade away from the franchise. The Ravens had put a non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson so he can speak with any interested team.
