Woody Johnson, Joe Douglas and the New York Jets organization pulled out all the stops in their quest to acquire Aaron Rodgers. With the 4x league MVP in the pocket, the Jets have solidified their place as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. And a large part of that roster confidence comes from the strong Jets defensive unit. However, Robert Saleh may end up losing one of the most integral cogs of his Jets machine because of his new QB1, Rodgers.

Quinnen Williams could be at the end of his New York chapter as Rodgers marked his arrival in the Metropolis. No, there is no beef between Aaron Rodgers and Williams. The details boil down to the financial negotiations. And Quinnen Williams took things into his own hand this week with a shocking Twitter post.

When Super Bowl XLV MVP Aaron Rodgers embarked on the Broadway-bound road late in April this year, there was a restructured contract being formulated in the background. As part of his new 3-year $150 million contract, Rodgers will make only $1.65 million in 2023 base salary. However, his 2024 payout has risen to $107.6 million. After all this and the few other additional pieces the Jets acquired, including Rodgers’ buddy Randall Cobb, the franchise has only $7.56 million in cap room at the moment. And this makes Quinnen Williams’ indirect demand quite hard to fulfil.

Currently in the last year of his contract, after the Jets picked his fifth-year option in the 2022 off-season, Williams stands to make $9.954 million in 2023. However, things have taken a sour turn as Williams refused to participate in the voluntary offseason training program until the franchise guarantees more security and a new deal is signed. Until that happens, the 25-year-old left things up in the air as he left a cryptic threat on Twitter. Williams changed his Twitter bio to “Defensive Tackle for ……,” hinting at a possible fallout with the Jets.

So what is his demand?

The tackle sent an indirect message to his organization when he retweeted the news of NY Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence signing a 4-year $90 million extension with $60 million guaranteed. Maybe that’s what he wants for himself. As per the latest developments, Williams’ agents and the Jets aren’t close to any agreement yet.

A-Rod will be disappointed because of a special connection with Williams

Former Green Bay Packers QB1 Aaron Rodgers wants a Vince Lombardi trophy this year. He’s made it pretty clear during his Jets press conferences. Quinnen Williams is a huge part of that, with 191 career tackles and 55 last season. He also had 12 sacks in 2022 to go with his 2 forced fumbles. However, that’s not why Rodgers will miss Williams the most.

The common link between the two is A-Rod’s favorite pastime, golf. Before Aaron Rodgers finalized his move, there was a lot of coercing from Jets players on Twitter. Quinnen Williams nudged Rodgers with some putting time. “I know some amazing golf courses in New Jersey and NYC that you can golf at all seasons,” he said.

That worked out perfectly. And it’s clear that Williams wants to share the gridiron with the iconic quarterback and eventually compete for the title. However, the contract negotiations are proving to be a significant roadblock in that mission, and both parties will hope for a smooth resolution.
