The deadline for NFL teams to negotiate contracts with their players is slowly approaching. With July 17 being the last day, many teams still have a lot of work in figuring out extensions and contracts with their players. And one of those teams is the Dallas Cowboys. The team recently parted ways with their veteran RB Ezekiel Elliott. Being drafted fourth overall in 2016, Elliott spent all his career with the Cowboys, and he now is on the hunt to find a new home in the league. The release of the 27-year-old has added another $10.9 million in cap space for the team, which brings it to $21.4 million, giving them room to negotiate contracts with other players.

And now, the team has gone forward to place their faith in another RB to take the place of Ezekiel Elliott on the roster. To further solidify this faith, they are even looking forward to signing a massive extension with this new star, which may come to fruition ahead of the July 17 deadline.

The Dallas Cowboys to sign an extension with Tony Pollard?

RB Tony Pollard had a fantastic run with the team in the 2022 season. Emerging as one of the Cowboys’ top defensive players, he broke the barrier of 1,000 rushing yards for the first time with a new career record of 193 carries. Because of this dominant performance, the team was confident enough in releasing the veteran Elliott and placing the franchise tag on the younger RB. And now, Pollard may be on his way to receiving a new extension that makes sure the team retains his services for the coming seasons ahead.

According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, despite being guaranteed around $10 million with the franchise tag, the RB is still open to talks for a new extension, while still recovering from a broken leg and ankle sprain against the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 playoffs. Fowler said, “Tony Pollard is really comfortable with his situation. Because he considers himself in a win-win.” He then went on to talk about how signing the $10.1 million franchise tag “guarantees him the money” along with insurance “coming off an ankle injury”. But even then. He is “open to extension talks”, which would get even more serious as the July 17 deadline approaches.

Where will Ezekiel Elliott go?

Last season was the worst record in Elliott’s career. This is one of the reasons why the Cowboys were comfortable enough to release him, despite him being a seasoned veteran for the franchise. While there were rumors of the team considering re-signing him, reported Jane Slater stated that the team may not be interested in going after the RB once again according to sources from the Cowboys’ front office. Recently, it was also reported that the Buffalo Bills may look like the most suitable destination for the 27-year-old RB. While the Bills may have a decent RB foundation, adding in the experience of someone like Elliott could prove to be a major move in order to win a Super Bowl ring.
