Despite being one of the most popular sports in the world, NFL has yet to be easily understood. With some of the rules and changes brought forward over the years inspiring hot takes from the players and franchises. The latest charity event involving Patrick Mahomes and fellow athletes has attracted heat because of the confusing NFL rules in place.

This is following the betting scandal that saw 4 players suspended and put the spotlight on the golf match. Although the match involved NFL stars, it was not an official event that invited the NFL rulebook.

NFL’s confusing rules

Mahomes has been making the most of his off season as he readies himself for the 2023 NFL season. After traveling to Hawaii and then to Vegas with his family while on vacation. The Chiefs QB participated in a charity golf match with his buddy and teammate Travis Kelce. They took on the Warriors star pairing of Thompson and Curry, and donated the proceeds to the charity.

Before the NFL could ascertain whether any bets were made on the golf match involving Mahomes. PFT came out in defense of the players and pointed out that NFL players are allowed to bet on non-NFL events. NFL is notorious with the rules they have set out, and any potential violation could have meant that the betters could have had the book thrown at them.

ML Football shared a tweet referring to the same. The Tweet captioned, CONFUSING: #NFL players can’t bet on #NFL games or any “#NFL events.” The recent golf match featuring #NFL players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce was not an official “#NFL event,” so players were allowed to bet on it.” The tweet also captioned, “This is why players keep getting in trouble, a lot of these rules are confusing and not clear.” With the latest news surrounding NFL sanctions, the league has suspended four players in the past week.

NFL’s indefinite sanctions leave players hanging

On the penultimate day of June 2023, NFL released a statement suspending four players for violating the betting rules. Three players have been suspended indefinitely while the fourth will miss the first six games of the season. Isaiah Rogers, Rashod Berry and FA Demetrius Taylor have been sanctioned indefinitely, which will last until the end of 2023 season at the very least. While Titans player, Nicholas Petit-Frere is set to miss the first six games of the season.

While the players indefinitely suspended can request reinstatement into the NFL. It will not be effective until after the 2023 season. This guarantees that they will miss out on the season that’s just weeks away. The suspension has seen the Colts waive Berry and Rodgers for the season ahead.
