Last Thursday, an incident that sent shockwaves throughout Kansas City occurred. A 16-year-old young black man, Ralph Paul Yarl, was shot by a homeowner after ringing the wrong doorbell. Yarl was on his way to pick up his twin brothers from a friend’s house but ended up at the wrong address, 115th Street instead of 115th Terrace. Tragically, he was shot twice and is still recovering.

As the news spread, calls for justice intensified in Kansas City. On Monday afternoon, charges were finally filed against a white man involved in the shooting. Among the many Kansas natives who expressed their unwavering support for Yarl and his family was NFL royalty, Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes hopes for accountability

The shooting of Ralph Yarl has made many question the world we live in. From a simplistic standpoint, the conversation between Yarl and his shooter should have been an easy one, with both going their respective ways, and Patrick Mahomes agrees.

Speaking during a virtual news conference, Mahomes offered his prayers and well wishes to the family while speaking his mind on the matter, “First off, I just want to say my prayers and support are for Ralph and his recovery,

Mahomes added, “Hopefully, the justice system does right by him and everyone involved, and we’re able to not have these conversations and we’re able to hold each other accountable for our actions, Then, the justice system does its part and that we’re all held accountable every single day.

‘Accountability’ is something Mahomes preached throughout, the Super Bowl MVP felt that the justice system had to do its part in maintaining transparency with its functioning and taking actions against the responsible parties.

Patrick Mahomes is not the only one taken aback by the recent happenings, as many Kansas City favorites including Jennifer Hudson expressed outrage over the matter. The shooting of Ralph Yarl has however united Kansas City, as his family stood side by side with hundreds of community members from across the Kansas City metro echoing a longing for justice.

Will justice be served?

The Kansas folks are certainly hoping for Ralph Yarl to get his due diligence and a fair shot at justice. Since the shooting, Andrew Lester, 84, has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

Yarl’s attorneys Lee Merritt and Ben Crump shed some light on the exact timeline of events during an interaction with NBC News, “Whoever was inside took a little longer than he anticipated to respond, and so he just waited at the door, He heard rustling around going on in the house and then finally the door was open,

According to a formal statement Yarl gave to the law enforcement investigators, he heard rustling around the house and was then confronted by Lester who warned him to not return and then fired two shots. The first bullet found its way to Yarl’s skull cracking it open while the second one landed on his upper right arm.

One prosecutor felt that there was a ‘racial component’ to the shooting and it must be taken into account throughout the investigation.

The incident involving George Floyd brought the “Black Lives Matter” movement to the forefront of many people’s attention. The passing of Tyre Nichols further strengthened this notion. Yet, we are still faced with incidents that do make us question whether justice will be served.
