The Kansas City Chiefs are meticulously assessing their roster in every aspect. With the NFL season underway, the Chiefs’ Week 1 season opener was marred by some costly errors. Despite Patrick Mahomes‘ valiant efforts to score more points, they were unable to secure a victory. The absence of the Chiefs’ long-standing standout defensive player, Chris Jones, was keenly felt by the team.
Consequently, the decision was made to provide support to the Red Team with the players it rightfully deserves and the compensation their superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, rightly merits. Hence, as the decision taken by owner Clark Hunt and coach Andy Reid, Jones is back in the team and Mahomes is back on the QB tally, helping the Chiefs escape through a difficult situation.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones have come up with a new deal adjustment. In 2020, Mahomes inked a massive 10-year, $450 million extension, but as the landscape of quarterback salaries continued to rise, it became evident that Mahomes’ true value couldn’t be overlooked. Consequently, the Chiefs and Mahomes agreed to a new contract, guaranteeing him $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026, making it the most weighty contract in NFL history over a four-season span.
This new deal also includes a performance-based clause and plans to revisit the terms after the 2026 season to align with the market value of quarterbacks. Before the new contract on Monday, Mahomes was slated to earn around $42 million until 2027. However, this reconstructed contract elevates his annual earnings to around $52 million, placing him ahead of players like Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson, who secured lucrative deals this year. Mahomes also comes close to Joe Burrow‘s recent extension, with his annual income set at $55 million, just $3 million more than Mahomes. He is now on the highest-earning QB list.
In addition to securing their young GOAT, the Chiefs also addressed their standout defensive player, Chris Jones, who signed a one-year contract worth up to $25 million this month. The combined pay raises for these two key players, especially Mahomes’ new contract, have eased the Chiefs’ financial concerns for a significant reason.

Patrick Mahomes, who celebrated his 28th birthday on September 17, had expressed a few months back that his primary goal wasn’t simply to be the highest-paid quarterback. Instead, he emphasized his desire to be fairly compensated while also considering the team’s best interests. He stated, “I’ll never do anything that’s going to hurt us from keeping the great players around me. So it’s kind of teetering around that line.”
In April, when asked about a potential extension for Mahomes, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt acknowledged the challenge of assigning a financial value to what the quarterback means to Kansas City. Hunt remarked, “I don’t know that there’s really a way to quantify it financially….And, no matter what he makes over his career, I’m sure one way or another he’ll be underpaid.” Brett Veach, Chiefs’20 general manager, highlighted the special relationship between the team and Mahomes and his agent, Chris Cabott, stressing their commitment to “make sure that we’re doing right by everybody” in regards to a potential new extension.
