With the latest round of press meets. Patrick Mahomes showed respect to the Niners and now, San Francisco Head coach Kyle Shanahan has heaped praises on Mahomes. Comparing the 27-year-old quarterback to Broncos legend John Elway.

In a recent interview, Shanahan revealed his admiration for Mahomes. While a reporter asked the HC about what he thinks of the quarterback’s improv skills in the pocket. He did not shy away from holding the player in the highest of regards. “Reminds me of Elway a ton watching him,” Shanahan said. “John Elway is the best thrower I’ve seen growing up and Mahomes is right there. If he’s not the best, then there’s one or two others tied with him.”

What about Patrick Mahomes reminds Shanahan of John Elway?

Apart from the elite throwing ability. According to the HC, the easy and shifty movements from the player in the pocket also remind him of the Hall of Famer. Even though the two played in completely different eras of the NFL. As per Kyle Shanahan, both have great similarities. From being top passers of the ball to further having elite mobility. According to him, the ability of Elway to create space and time for his offense to get in positions on a 3rd or a 4th down is what made him so special. Apart from the fact that he could even run for first downs, but still had great skill to navigate the spaces in the pocket to manipulate the plays.

This skill that we see in Mahomes as well is what reminds him of Elway. “When it came to two-minute drives when it came to the fourth quarter when he really just in regards to the play just took over and that’s what you see in Mahomes. And you know it’s a matter of time before he does that.” Added Shanahan.

John Elway

The quarterback spent his entire career playing for the Denver Broncos. In 16 seasons, the player had thrown for 51475 yards. Making 9 Pro Bowl selections further adding an MVP award in the 1987 season. After making his debut in 1983, his two rings came simultaneously and at the tail end of his career in 1997 and 1998.

Patrick Mahomes will be taking the center stage this Sunday against the 49ers. And Shanahan will put his admiration for the player aside. While hoping that a strong defensive unit will be able to slow down the rapid offense of the Chiefs.
