Patrick Mahomes is leading the Kansas City Chiefs without a top 10 wide receiver this season. Yes, he does have his most dependable offensive weapon in Travis Kelce. However, Mahomes is the key driver in the lethal Kansas offense. And he is getting MVP shout outs not just from his teammates and fans, but also from rival head coaches.
Denver HC Nathaniel Hackett is not scared of facing Patrick Mahomes in their next game. However, he is in awe of the star quarterback’s unique skill set. Hackett thinks the Super Bowl LVI champion is on the way to an MVP award at the end of this season. Mahomes and Co. were on a 5-game winning streak before losing to Joe Burrow and the Bengals last Sunday. However, Hackett doesn’t think this makes a difference.
“He’s [Patrick Mahomes] just in that mindset and he’s just playing out of his mind, whether it’s the proper play or whether it’s in rhythm or he’s going to make plays with his feet,” the former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator said. Safe to say, Hackett has been in an elite company before when he worked with Packers QB and reigning back-to-back NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. And Hackett thinks it’s Mahomes’ year this time. “He looks to me to be an MVP,” Nathaniel noted.
Patrick Mahomes is calling impromptu plays masterfully according to Hackett
Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett came in during the off-season to make the AFC West a little more competitive and provide a challenge to Mahomes and the Chiefs. Denver also got in Super Bowl-winning QB Russell Wilson to make the Broncos legitimate competition. However, Kansas still tops the AFC West standings and Denver Broncos are at the last position in the division with a 3-9 record. And much of it has to do with Patrick Mahomes.
The Super Bowl LVI champion is leading the NFL this season in passing yards and passing touchdowns after Week 13. Moreover, Patrick Mahomes is also getting gradually menacing in rushing the ball and using his legs when needed. Sometimes when Mahomes spots man-to-man coverage and doesn’t find his tight end Travis Kelce open, the QB just runs it for a casual 19 or 20 yards. This is mind-blowing to Nathaniel Hackett.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a spotless record against the Denver Broncos in their nine matchups since Patrick Mahomes’ arrival in 2017. And Nathaniel Hackett’s awe and fear are justified. And this season doesn’t look like the one where Denver gets their first win in the head-to-head. Can Russell Wilson get back his Seattle Seahawks form or will Pat Mahomes prevail on Sunday?
